“What is a Fast?”
Fast: a voluntary abstinence from food for a period of time for a spiritual purpose.
#1 - Disconnect from “the world” and connect to God
1 JOHN 2:15 MSG Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father.
We will either go to the world for our fulfillment or to God, but we can’t go to both. The love of the world stops us from loving and connecting to God.
Love: to be pleased with or find pleasure in, find contentment
Q1 - What are some things that cause us to be disconnected from God?
Q2 - Do you find 1 John 2:15 to be true in your life? Explain.
#2 - going to the world for fulfillment is the same as adultery
JAMES 4:4 TLB You are like an unfaithful wife who loves her husband’s enemies. Don’t you realize that making friends with God’s enemies—the evil pleasures of this world—makes you an enemy of God? I say it again, that if your aim is to enjoy the evil pleasure of the unsaved world, you cannot also be a friend of God.
Our walk with God is not a religion, it is a relationship. Since it is a relationship, we are supposed to approach God with love, commitment, and honor.
Q3 - Does a Christian defend sin or expose sin? Why?
Q4 - Understanding that going to the world is unfaithfulness to God (like adultery), how does that impact your walk with God?
#3 - Fasting is like breaking up with the devil and coming back to god
JAMES 4:7 TLB So give yourselves humbly to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 And when you draw close to God, God will draw close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and let your hearts be filled with God alone to make them pure and true to him.
Q5 - Do you have a wall/barrier that you seem to have a hard time breaking through? Could it be that you need to resist the devil from your life?
Q6 - Share about a time that you had to break up with the devil.
benefits of connecting to god through fasting
#1 - clarity
ACTS 13:2 TLB One day as these men were worshiping and fasting the Holy Spirit said, “Dedicate Barnabas and Paul for a special job I have for them.”
Q7 - What clarity are you praying to receive during fasting?
#2 - power
LUKE 4:14 NLT Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region.
Q8 - What does it say about us if Jesus needed to be filled with the Holy Spirit’s power? How much more would we need to be filled?
#3 - joy
PSALMS 16:11 ESV You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Q9 - Does your relationship with God give you joy? Explain.
