Christmas is coming! What is the most memorable gift you've received on Christmas?
The purpose of this lesson is to learn what the true meaning of worship is. We must realize that Christmas is all about Jesus, and we cannot ignore the main reason for the season.
Matthew 2:1-2 NLT Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, 2 “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.
How can we honor Jesus this Christmas? Answer: by coming to worship him. The wise men traveled around 800 miles to worship Jesus on the day he was born. What can we learn from the wise men about worship?
1. We worship God, even when it's not the popular thing to do.
Matthew 10:32-33 NLT Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my father in heaven. But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.
Q1 - What are some common places that you encounter where being a Christian is not the popular thing to do?
Q2 - Why do you think God isn't very popular in these places? And How can we make God more famous in the places we visit?
2. We worship God as King over our lives.
Q3 - Could it be that we show more honor and respect to our bosses than we do to God?
Q4 - What are some ways we can treat God more like he is King, rather than just our "buddy?"
3. We worship God, even when it's not easy.
The wise men were on an 800 mile journey from the eastern lands to worship Jesus on the day of his birth. This trip probably took around 2 years to complete, without the use of airplanes, cars, trains, or any automobile.
Q5 - Are there obstacles that sometimes arise that make it difficult to come to church on a consistent basis?
Q6 - How does the determination of the wise men give us a better perspective on the word "excuses?" How can we get better at our determination, and grow past giving excuses?
4. We worship God with all of our will, bodies, attendance, and treasures.
John 14:15 NLT Of you love me, obey my commandments.
There are many ways that we can be tempted to not give our bodies to God, but without giving him our will and our bodies, we are not really worshipping Him.
Q7 - Are there times in your life that you've been tempted to give your self to things other than God?
Q8 - Some say "I was at church in spirit," but the wise men made an effort to be there physically. How can we better worship God by coming to the house of God?
Declaration: I am a worshipper! I will worship God when it's not the popular thing to do, I will worship Him as king over my life, I will worship Him even when it's not easy, and I will worship Him with all of my will, body, attendance, and treasures!
Practice worshipping God with your life, instead of just through a song. Be intentional this week about coming to services and giving your all to God.
