The purpose of this lesson is to continue our study on relationships and discover why the "monkey see, monkey do rule" doesn’t work in a relationship, and how the golden rule is so important.
Ephesians 5:1 NLT Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.
It is easy to find ourselves motivated to treat someone fairly when we’ve been treated fairly. And other days it’s easy togive someone payback when they've treated us unfairly. However, Jesus showed us how to treat others, no matter how they treat you. What we learned is that when we treat others based on how they treat us, we lose more than we gain. but when we treat others that way we’d like them to treat us, we win.
Q1- What comes more natural to you? Treating others based on how they treat you, or treating others based on how you want to be treated?
Q2- How did Jesus show us the golden rule in the way he lived?
Q3- How can we imitate Jesus better when we intereact with others?
1. Monkey See, Monkey Do
John 17:23 (NLT) I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me….
Q4 - What are some signs that you’re dealing with a monkey see, monkey do mentality?
Q5 - According to the original translation, when we use payback we are “give away using your own profits.” What are our profits? (Hint: joy, peace, relationships, etc)
2. Golden rule
Matthew 7.12 NLT Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.
Q6- Describe the ideal way you would like someone to treat you.
Q7- In what practical ways can you begin treating others this way, especially when they treat you unfairly?
Declaration: I declare that I will walk according to the Golden Rule! I declare that my life will imitate Jesus in the way he loved others. I declare that I will no longer walk in a “payback” mentality, and will love others even if I am treated unfairly!
