Icebreaker: What are your plans for October 31st? (Leader: invite them to Harvest Fest at Arrowhead Campus)
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to show us how to conquer fear, emotional stress, anxiety by passing the test of fear in our lives.
Matthew 14:22-33 NKJV
22 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. 23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. 24 But the boat was now in the middle of the sea,[a] tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”
28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw that the wind wasboisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”
Discussion: With a mindset of fear, we look at the future through a lens of defeat, lack, brokenness, and anxiety. Fear will not allow you to see the good in something. Nothing in this world is all bad, but fear will blind us from the good in life.
Q1 - Why does the enemy want you to believe that God is not with you in the storm?
Q2 - What would happen if we walked confidently that Jesus is with us in our storms?
4 steps to passing the test
1. KNow that there is a test
Q3 - Sometimes we don't even realize we're walking in a test. Can you identify any tests you're facing right now?
2. Prepare for the test
1 Peter 4:12-13 NLT Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.
Q4 - Why should we not say "why me?" when facing a test?
Q5 - Why do you think the trial reveals what our true colors are? (When we're going through a trial, it shows what we really believe)
3. have the rigfht attitude about the test
Q6 - Why is it so important to keep ourselves from negative thinking during a test?
4. take good notes
Q7 - There is safety in God's instructions. What instruction has God given you that you can begin writing today?
Declaration: I am prepared for the test! I will commit to keeping the right attitude and heart towards the test! I will not complain, I will not give up, I will not back down. Instead, I will run until I win the prize and walk in my victory!
Application: Practice writing down the instructions that God has given you during the test. Remember that God is the one in control, and He is planning your life. Trust in Him, and He will guide your steps.
