Icebreaker: Are you excited summer is almost officially over?
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to explain why we evangelize and its purpose not only in the lives of others but the role it plays in our lives as well.
Main Scripture: “And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.” Mark 16:15-16 NLT
Discussion: When we think of evangelism what comes to mind? Is it the grand crusades of the good old days? The hundreds of thousands being reached in third world countries or in hidden churches in China? It can be a big and scary word but the truth is, you could probably walk a few blocks from your house and have an evangelism crusade in your own neighborhood. Some of us feel like evangelism just isn’t for us. Well, if we love God, we love his people. And if we love his people, we love his message. And if we love his message, we are compelled to evangelize. To witness to the world the goodness of God. But how do we do it? What do we say? Where do we do it? Are we qualified? It isn’t as complicated as it seems. And it doesn’t make us crazy! Besides, where would we be if someone didn’t first bring the message of Christ to us?
Q1: What do you think of when you hear the word “evangelism”?
Q2: Do you feel you’re called to evangelize? Why or why not?
Three Reasons We Evangelize
1. It is our number one responsibility and ministry as believers.
“Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation,” 2 Corinthians 5:28 NKJV
Q3: What do you think of when you hear “reconcile”?
Q4: What are some things God has reconciled in your life?
2. You get a full understanding of who God is.
“I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.” Philemon 1:6 NIV
Q5: What are the ways evangelism helps us brings us understanding about God?
Q6: Are there some areas in your faith where you could be more active? What are they?
3. Because people are headed to hell, and we need to warn them.
“Now, son of man, I am making you a watchman for the people of Israel. Therefore, listen to what I say and warn them for me. If I announce that some wicked people are sure to die and you fail to tell them to change their ways, then they will die in their sins, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths. But if you warn them to repent and they don’t repent, they will die in their sins, but you will have saved yourself.” Ezekiel 33:7-9 NLT
Q7: What does this passage mean when it says to warn them? How are we to do that?
Q8: What do we do when someone rejects the warning?
Declaration: I declare that my number one ministry is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. I believe that God has called me to carry His presence wherever I go. I will remember that the church is not confined to four walls. The church is within me. I am the church!
Application: Don’t wait for another altar call to help someone find Jesus! Remember, you are the church and you bring the altar of God with you! Step out in faith and pray with someone God has put on your heart this week!
