Icebreaker: Let's take a moment to pray for those affected by the tragedy in Las Vegas
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to remove the limitations that we have placed on ourselves and God.
Main Scripture: 34 When the herdsmen saw it, they fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. 35 People rushed out to see what had happened. A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been freed from the demons. He was sitting at Jesus’ feet, fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid.
36 Then those who had seen what happened told the others how the demon-possessed man had been healed. 37 And all the people in the region of the Gerasenes begged Jesus to go away and leave them alone, for a great wave of fear swept over them. So Jesus returned to the boat and left, crossing back to the other side of the lake. Luke 8:34-37 (NLT)
Often times, God does things in our lives that are completely unexpected. When we are praying about a situation, we expect God to answer us in a way that we have imagined in our minds; but our God is infinite. His ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts. He does not fit into any box that we try to put Him in. Through this lesson, let's allow the Holy Spirit to show us the limitations that we have put on God, and on ourselves!
1. Jesus does not fit in your box.
Q1: Jesus was present in Gerasenes to do miracles, but the people turned him away. How does fear hinder the move of God in our lives?
Q2: Why is it important not to get caught up in the "method?" How can the method prevent us from effectively sharing the message of Jesus Christ.
2. Jesus is everything that we need. He is "I AM"
Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I am (John 8:58)
Q3: What does "I AM" mean in your own words?
Q4: How does recognizing that Jesus is "I AM" shatter the boxes we put Him in? How does it shatter the boxes that we put ourselves in?
3. The Spirit of God takes the limits off of our lives and helps us to do what we could not do.
Q5: Why is the power of the Holy Spirit so important in our lives?
Q6: In what areas of your life have you been hesitant to do what God is asking you to do?
Q7: Are self-limitations selfish?
Declaration:I choose to live a life without limits. I know that by the power of the Holy Spirit, I can do anything God is calling me to do! I declare that my God is powerful, He is infinite, He is Good, and He will work all things out for my good. I do not have to understand it all. I will trust His Wisdom and His Goodness.
Application: Take a step of faith this week! Do something outside of your normal "box." Pray for a co worker, witness to someone on the street, join ministry etc. Watch God meet you at your point of Faith!
