Ice Breaker

What are you most excited to see in heaven?

Word

“Overcoming Fear of Death”

Overcoming: to get the better of in a struggle or conflict; to conquer, to defeat an enemy, a weakness, a temptation, to prevail over, have victory.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 NLT For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.

Ecclesiastes 7:2 NLT Better to spend your time at funerals than at parties. After all, everyone dies— so the living should take this to heart.

Here are some stats to really consider: 55 million people die every year; 151,630 die every day; and 105 people die every minute.

Fact #1 - “We Will All Die!”

Q1 - So now that we know everyone will face death, how do you prepare for it?

Q2 - Why does the scripture say it is better to go to a funeral rather than a party?

Fact #2 - “Tomorrow is not Guaranteed!”

James 4:13-15 NLT Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”

Q3 - Since our days are limited, where should our mindset be?

Q4 - Why does the scripture say it is better to go to a funeral rather than a party?

Fact #3 - “After death, we will all be judged!”

There are only 2 destinations that we will end up after we die: Eternal punishment (Hell) or Eternal Life (Heaven).

Hebrews 9:27 NLT And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment,
Matthew 25:46 NLT “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”

Eternal: absolute fullness of life which belongs to God
Punishment: judgement, a sentence of condemnation

Q5 - Why would anyone choose judgement?

Q6 - How can you receive a guarantee for eternal life?

3 steps to overcome fear of death

Step #1 - Face Fear

It is natural to fear death, and some people’s way to deal with this fear is being in denial.

Psalms 55:4-5 NLT My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. 5 Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking.

Q7 - Why would it be wise to think about death?

Step #2 - Turn to God to Overcome Fear

Hebrews 2:14 NLT Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.

Q8 - Why should we not fear death?

John 3:36 NLT And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.”

Q9 - Who can be free from God’s angry judgment?

Step #3 - Think about Heaven

The more we think about heaven, the more faith we will have about heaven. We can ask God to real heaven to us. In heaven we will be with Jesus forever.

1 Corinthians 2:9 NLT That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”

Q9 - What do you expect heaven to be like? Who are you excited to see in heaven?

Giving

We are preparing to complete our 15th year of ministry, and enter year 16! We have accomplished so much together! Just recently we sent dozens and dozens of inner-city children to a trip to visit UCLA. Children and teens now have a dream to do more than live in the streets, or be bound by drugs. They see themselves as future doctors, dentists, lawyers, teachers, and more! Thank you for making it possible to change the course of our children’s lives!! We are so appreciative that you contribute towards such a great cause! If you would like to make a contribution towards this cause, and more great causes like this, you can donate today.

Fellowship

Declaration Prayer:

Father, thank you for helping me overcome the fear of death! I believe that you have died on the cross and rose from the dead so that I can be saved. I place my faith in Jesus Christ, not in my own works. And because of that, I know that when I die, I will be in heaven with you for eternity! Help me to think of heaven and share my faith with others so that they can be assured of their salvation as well! In Jesus Name Amen!

application:

You have some good news!! You have been saved by Jesus! Let’s share that Good News with someone this week and share about it at our next group meeting.
