What was your favorite game to play as a kid?
Luke 17:1 CSB He said to his disciples, “Offenses will certainly come, but woe to the one through whom they come!
Offense will always look for an opportunity to take you out. If we are not careful against offenses when they come, we will continually be taken off course and vulnerable to offenses whenever they come. Offense hinders our ability to love others, it hinders our relationships with people and with God, it obstructs our vision, and it traps our ability to prosper. If we are running into the problem of being offended with everyone we come into contact with, then maybe we need to grow/mature so that we can learn to handle offense.
Q1 - This first question is simple, but requires honesty. Have you ever been offended? Why do you think you were so offended?
Offense: (skandalon) a trap/obstacle placed in the way with the purpose to cause us to stumble and draw us into error and sin.
Q2 - When it comes to dealing with offense, are other people the problem or is accepting offense the real problem?
Q3 - Jesus said offenses will certainly come. How true is this for you? Do you face opportunities to be offended?
Q4 - Read Luke 17:1 again. Jesus knew offenses would come because he faced them personally. How do you think he was able to deal with them so well?
Offenses are traps!
Here are some areas we will get trapped in if we become offended:
1. Our ability to love will be hindered
Proverbs 18:19 AMP A brother offended is harder to win over than a fortified city, And contentions [separating families] are like the bars of a castle.
Q5 - What do you think would be harder: not falling for the trap of offense or winning someone over that’s already offended?
Q6 - In your life, is there a relationship that has been restored after offense tried to cause division?
Q7 - Is there anyone in your life that you need to forgive?
2. Our relationships with God will be hindered
Ephesians 4:30-32 AMP And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [but seek to please Him], by whom you were sealed and marked [branded as God’s own] for the day of redemption [the final deliverance from the consequences of sin]. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor [perpetual animosity, resentment, strife, fault-finding] and slander be put away from you, along with every kind of malice [all spitefulness, verbal abuse, malevolence]. 32 Be kind and helpful to one another, tender-hearted [compassionate, understanding], forgiving one another [readily and freely], just as God in Christ also forgave you.
Q8 - Could you have unforgiveness towards someone and still have a healthy spiritual life?
3. Our spiritual vision will be obstructed
Matthew 6:22 TPT “The eyes of your spirit allow revelation-light to enter into your being. If your heart is unclouded, the light floods in!
Q9 - This scripture says “If your heart is unclouded, the light floods in!” How can offense and unforgiveness cloud your heart?
4. Our ability to prosper will be trapped.
Quote: to forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that prisoner was me.
Q10 - How does offense and unforgiveness become a prison for the person who is offended?
I will not be overcome by offense. I will guard my heart, love others, and forgive. God, you have forgiven me when I’ve sinned. I will use your love to forgive others who offend me. Thank you Jesus!
Keep this thought in front of you all week: forgive. Practice immediately forgiving someone as soon as offense tries to enter.
Our church continues to make a huge difference in our inner-city through food giveaways, hot meals, clothing, and taking in men/women into our men’s home and our women’s home. With your generous support, we can continue reaching lives with the love of Jesus!
3 ways to make an impact:
Our youth ministry continues to impact lives by making a difference in our youth. Believe it or not, some of our teens are dealing with a level of homeless in our city. But because of your donations, our youth ministry was able to provide some of these teens with clothes, food, and other resources for living. Thank you for you continual support in making an impact in our city!
