TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Acts 13:20-25 (NLT) - 20 All this took about 450 years. “After that, God gave them judges to rule until the time of Samuel the prophet. 21 Then the people begged for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for forty years. 22 But God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’ 23 “And it is one of King David’s descendants, Jesus, who is God’s promised Savior of Israel! 24 Before he came, John the Baptist preached that all the people of Israel needed to repent of their sins and turn to God and be baptized. 25 As John was finishing his ministry he asked, ‘Do you think I am the Messiah? No, I am not! But he is coming soon—and I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the sandals on his feet.’

TRUTH #1

GOD’S PLAN IS UNFOLDING THROUGH HISTORY (Acts 13:20-22)

  • God had a plan for his people from the very beginning. Each phase pointed to His ultimate plan of redemption.

  • God’s leadership in Israel’s history shows His patience and faithfulness to us, even when we are unfaithful to Him.

  • Every part of God’s plan is leading to Jesus, so that we can be redeemed and forgiven. 

  • In our lives, although we can be unfaithful to God, He still has a plan to set us free.

2 Thessalonians 3:3 - But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.

TRUTH #2

JESUS IS THE PROMISED SAVIOR (Acts 13:23)

  • God fulfilled His promise through David’s lineage by sending Jesus as the Savior. This declaration reveals that redemption was always His purpose

  • Savior (σωτήρ, sōtēr) – One who rescues or delivers; in this context, the promised Messiah who brings salvation to all.

  • Jesus’ coming was planned and promised by God from the beginning.

  • God’s promises always come true, even if their fulfillment takes generations.

  • Jesus’ role as Savior reflects God’s desire to rescue humanity from sin.

REPENTANCE PREPARES US FOR GOD’S WORK (Acts 13:24-25)

  • John the Baptist’s ministry was about repentance—preparing hearts to receive Jesus.

  • Repentance remains a key step in our relationship with God.

  • Definition: Repentance (μετάνοια, metanoia) – A transformative change of heart and mind, turning away from sin and toward God.

Acts 3:19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,

  • Repentance is essential for preparing our hearts to receive God’s work.

  • The only way we see the redemptive power of God happen in our own lives is by turning away from the sin and turning to God.
