TODAY’S PASSAGE:

John 17:20-26 (NLT) - 20 “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. 21 I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. 22 “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. 24 Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began! 25 “O righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. 26 I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.”

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What did you learn from what we just read?

TRUTH #1

JESUS PERSONALLY PRAYED FOR US!

John 17:20 (NLT) - “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.”

  • This prayer from Jesus is amazing because it covers every future believer, including you and me!

  • Jesus’ prayer highlights the power of the Gospel message being passed down through generations.

  • Jesus eagerly anticipated His disciples passing on what they’d seen and heard from Him to others, creating a long line of disciples who make disciples through history!

  • It’s also amazing to note that He didn’t just die for us — He prayed for us!

Romans 8:34 (NLV) - “… He is on the right side of God praying to Him for us.”

  • His love for us is so deep that He is still praying for us even now!

  • You were on Jesus’ mind as He approached and endured the cross.

Hebrews 7:25 (NLT) - “Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them.”

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

How does knowing Jesus prayed for YOU before the cross affect your view of His love and purpose for your life?

TRUTH #2

OUR UNITY REVEALS JESUS TO THE WORLD!

John 17:21–23 (NLT) - “I pray that they will all be one… so that the world will believe you sent me.”

  • Jesus plainly states that unity among believers will cause the world to believe the Gospel.

  • Christian unity should reflect the relationship between the Father and the Son — deeply rooted in love and shared purpose.

  • Disunity among believers damages our witness, while genuine love and togetherness promotes the Gospel and attracts people to its truth.

  • Unity doesn’t mean uniformity; it means shared mission, mutual love, and humble cooperation.

  • Jesus gave us His glory (v. 22) — the presence and power of God that enables unity.

  • Our unity as believers is dependent upon our unity with Jesus and the Father. If we aren’t united with Him, we’ll never be united with each other.

  • The world won’t be convinced by our words alone. It needs to see our visible love and unity in Christ.

John 13:35 (NLT) – “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What are some practical ways we can promote unity in our families, small groups, or church? What hinders it?

TRUTH #3

JESUS DESIRES TO BE WITH US FOREVER!

John 17:24–26 (NLT) - “Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am…”

  • Jesus’ prayer ends with longing. He wants us to be with Him, not just now, but forever!

  • This echoes a promise He made earlier to His disciples.

John 14:3 (NLT) - “... I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.”

  • Our eternal destiny isn’t just heaven – it’s eternal fellowship with Jesus!

  • Jesus wants us to see His glory – the beauty of His character – and to know the Father’s love, the same love the Father has for the Son (v. 26).

  • This prayer is an invitation to deeper relationship and an encouragement for all of us when life gets tough.

1 Thessalonians 4:17–18 (NLT) – “And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What does it mean to you that Jesus wants to be with you forever? How can you live with that perspective today?

CLOSING QUESTION

What is one thing from today’s lesson that you will apply this week?

GIVING

The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.

Luke 6:38 (NLT)
Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”

Encourage everyone to give their tithes and offerings.
