TODAY’S PASSAGE:

John 8:1-11 (NLT) - 1 Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. 4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?” 6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. 9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” 11 “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

TRUTH #1

THE ENEMY WANTS TO TRAP US, BUT JESUS WANTS TO SHOW US MERCY (V. 3-6)

  • The religious leaders tried to trap Jesus by pointing out the woman’s sin.

  • Jesus knew her mistake but didn’t judge her harshly like they wanted.

  • Instead of punishing her, Jesus showed her kindness and understanding.

Titus 3:4-5 (NLT) - 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.

  • This verse shows that God saves us because of His mercy, not our goodness.

  • It reminds us that Jesus offers kindness to everyone, no matter their mistakes.

TRUTH #2

JESUS CHALLENGES US TO EXAMINE OURSELVES (V. 7-9)

  • Jesus told the accusers that only someone perfect could judge the woman.

  • One by one, they all left because they knew they had sinned too.

  • When it comes to looking at others' lifestyles, we should look at our own hearts before pointing out their wrongs.

Matthew 7:3-4 (NLT) - 3 “Why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? 4 How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye?”

  • This verse teaches us to focus on fixing our own mistakes first. 

  • It encourages us to be humble and kind instead of judging others.

TRUTH #3

JESUS FORGIVES US AND CALLS US TO CHANGE (V. 10-11)

  • Jesus didn’t punish the woman but forgave her and set her free.

  • He was the only one in the group that was without sin, yet he chose to forgive her instead of stone her. 

  • He told her to “sin no more,” showing her a new way to live.

  • Jesus doesn't just forgive us, but He calls us to follow Him and leave sin behind.

Romans 2:4 (NLT)- “Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?”

  • This verse is a reminder of how merciful Jesus is towards all of us.

  • But most importantly, we are reminded that God's mercy is intended to lead us away from sin, not back in it.

GIVING

When you extend help and compassion to those who are hungry, thirsty, in need of clothing, etc., you are doing it for Jesus Christ Himself.

Matthew 25:34-36, 40 (NLT)
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ 40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’
