GROWTH QUESTION #3

TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Genesis 48:1-11 (NLT) - 1 One day not long after this, word came to Joseph, “Your father is failing rapidly.” So Joseph went to visit his father, and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 2 When Joseph arrived, Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to see you.” So Jacob gathered his strength and sat up in his bed. 3 Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me. 4 He said to me, ‘I will make you fruitful, and I will multiply your descendants. I will make you a multitude of nations. And I will give this land of Canaan to your descendants after you as an everlasting possession.’ 5 “Now I am claiming as my own sons these two boys of yours, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born here in the land of Egypt before I arrived. They will be my sons, just as Reuben and Simeon are. 6 But any children born to you in the future will be your own, and they will inherit land within the territories of their brothers Ephraim and Manasseh.7 “Long ago, as I was returning from Paddan-aram, Rachel died in the land of Canaan. We were still on the way, some distance from Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). So with great sorrow I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath.”8 Then Jacob looked over at the two boys. “Are these your sons?” he asked.9 “Yes,” Joseph told him, “these are the sons God has given me here in Egypt.”And Jacob said, “Bring them closer to me, so I can bless them.” 10 Jacob was half blind because of his age and could hardly see. So Joseph brought the boys close to him, and Jacob kissed and embraced them. 11 Then Jacob said to Joseph, “I never thought I would see your face again, but now God has let me see your children, too!”

Opening QUESTION

When you think about the people who shaped your faith or values the most, what stands out more—their words, their actions, or simply their presence?

TRUTH #1

GOD’S PROMISES OUTLAST OUR STRENGTH.

Genesis 48:3-4 (NLT) - Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me. He said to me, ‘I will make you fruitful and multiply your descendants. I will make you a multitude of nations, and I will give this land of Canaan to your descendants after you as an everlasting possession.’”

  • Jacob is physically weak and nearing death, yet he speaks with confidence about God’s promises.
  • He does not define his legacy by what he accomplished, but by what God promised and did.
  • This moment reminds us that God’s covenant faithfulness is not dependent on our energy, health, or stage of life.
  • God’s redemptive plan continues even when our personal capacity feels diminished.
  • God is faithful across every season. Our weakness does not cancel His promises—it often highlights them.

2 Corinthians 4:16 (NLT) — That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

How does knowing that God’s work doesn’t depend on your strength bring encouragement today?

TRUTH #2

GOD REDEEMS THE WHOLE STORY— JOYFUL AND PAINFUL PARTS TOGETHER.

Genesis 48:3, 7, 11 (NLT) - 3 Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me… 7 Long ago, as I was returning from Paddan-aram, Rachel died in the land of Canaan… So with great sorrow I buried her there…” 11 Then Jacob said to Joseph, “I never thought I would see your face again, but now God has let me see your children, too!’”

  • As Jacob prepares to bless the next generation, he remembers both sacred encounters and deep loss.
  • He does not ignore pain, nor does he allow it to dominate the story.
  • God’s redemption does not erase grief; it places it within a larger story of restoration.
  • Healing often comes not from understanding it all, but from seeing how God faithfully carried us through.
  • God redeems all of our story. Joy and pain alike become instruments of grace in His hands.

Romans 8:28 (NLT) — And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

What stands out to you about the memories Jacob chooses to share here?

TRUTH #3

GOD SHAPES THE FUTURE THROUGH CLOSE, ORDINARY MOMENTS.

Genesis 48:1, 9-10 (NLT) - 1 So Joseph went to visit his father, and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim… 9 Joseph told him, “These are the sons God has given me here in Egypt.” And Jacob said, “Bring them closer to me, so I can bless them.” 10 … So Joseph brought the boys close to him, and Jacob kissed and embraced them.

  • This future-shaping moment happens during a simple family visit—not a sermon, not a ceremony, not a public platform.
  • God often does His most meaningful work in moments that feel routine: a conversation at home, a shared meal, a visit, a goodbye.
  • For parents, this passage is a reminder that everyday moments—time spent, words spoken, affection shown—can carry lasting spiritual impact.
  • For small-group leaders, it affirms that opening your home, sharing your table, and inviting people into your life truly matters.
  • For those serving faithfully week after week, it reassures us that even brief interactions—a prayer, an encouragement, a farewell—can become moments God uses to shape someone’s future.
  • God is sovereign over outcomes, but He chooses to work through our presence, consistency, and willingness to show up.
  • God shapes lives through faithful presence. When we choose to show up, invite others close, and invest in ordinary moments, God uses those moments in ways we may never fully see.

1 Thessalonians 2:8 (NLT) — We loved you so much that we shared with you not only God’s Good News but our own lives, too.

Malachi 3:10 (NLT)
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!
