TODAY’S PASSAGE:

John 21:15-25 (NLT)
15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him. 16 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said 7 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep. 18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.” 20 Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?” 21 Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” 22 Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.” 23 So the rumor spread among the community of believers that this disciple wouldn’t die. But that isn’t what Jesus said at all. He only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” 24 This disciple is the one who testifies to these events and has recorded them here. And we know that his account of these things is accurate. 25 Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What did you learn from what we just read?

TRUTH #1

NO MATTER HOW UTTERLY YOU HAVE FAILED, JESUS CAN AND WILL RESTORE YOU. (V. 15-19)

  • In this conversation, Jesus lovingly restores Peter after his failures.

  • Peter pridefully declared that he would never abandon or deny Jesus.

Matthew 26:33-34 (NLT) - 33 Peter declared, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.” 34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.”

  • Jesus gently reminds Peter of this moment, asking him if he loves Him “more than these” other disciples (all of whom had also abandoned him).

  • Peter responds two times before recognizing that Jesus is offering Him what he most desires - forgiveness and restoration.

  • Though Jesus’ repeated question hurts Peter, it ultimately leads to his healing.
  • Restoration can’t happen without a clear acknowledgement of our failure.

1 John 1:9 (NLT) - But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

  • You are not disqualified by failure. If Jesus can restore Peter, He can restore anyone.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

Can you think of a time when you felt like you really blew it—but Jesus gave you a second chance? What did that restoration feel like?

TRUTH #2

COMPARISONS CAN KILL YOUR CALLING. (V. 20-23)

  • Peter, after being restored, immediately turns to ask about John: “What about him?”

  • Peter seems to be tempted to compare his path to John’s, but Jesus shuts that down quickly saying, “What is that to you?”

  • Faithfulness, not fairness, is the goal. (Matthew 25:14-30)

  • God has given each of us a unique and powerful call, one that no one else can do.

Ephesians 2:10 (NLT) - For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

  • Your story and what you’re going to accomplish for the Kingdom was designed by God Himself.

  • Stay focused on what God is calling you to do. Don’t waste your energy wondering what others are doing.

Galatians 6:4 (NLT) - Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

Has there ever been a time when comparing yourself to someone else discouraged you or made you feel “less than”? What helped you refocus?

TRUTH #3

THERE’S MORE THAN ENOUGH EVIDENCE, BUT YOU MUST CHOOSE TO BELIEVE. (V. 24-25)

  • The Gospel of John is a trustworthy, eyewitness account. The stories John relayed were well-known to the church and verified by many other reliable witnesses.
  • However, John also made it clear that his book could not possibly contain all that Jesus did.
  • It might be possible to write down an exhaustive list of all that a prophet or king accomplished on the earth, but Jesus is no ordinary man. He is alive forever and continues to work on our behalf! No book can contain all that He has done and is doing right now!
  • The miraculous things that John tells us Jesus did may not cover it all, but they are still more than enough to believe in Jesus as the Son of God.

John 20:30-31 (NLT) - 30 The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.

  • There will always be mysteries, but not enough to excuse unbelief.
  • Faith is a decision. Jesus gave more than enough evidence of who He is.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

Is there an area where you're still waiting for more “evidence” before fully trusting Jesus? What would it look like to surrender that today and believe anyway?

CLOSING QUESTION

What is one thing from today’s lesson that you will apply this week?

GIVING

Following Jesus means looking out for the needs of others and giving sacrificially to care for one another.

Acts 2:44-45 (NLT)
44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.

Encourage everyone to give their tithes and offerings.
