TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Genesis 37:1-11 (NLT) - 1 So Jacob settled again in the land of Canaan, where his father had lived as a foreigner.

2 This is the account of Jacob and his family. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he often tended his father’s flocks. He worked for his half brothers, the sons of his father’s wives Bilhah and Zilpah. But Joseph reported to his father some of the bad things his brothers were doing.

3 Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph—a beautiful robe. 4 But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him.

5 One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever. 6 “Listen to this dream,” he said. 7 “We were out in the field, tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine!”

8 His brothers responded, “So you think you will be our king, do you? Do you actually think you will reign over us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them.

9 Soon Joseph had another dream, and again he told his brothers about it. “Listen, I have had another dream,” he said. “The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me!”

10 This time he told the dream to his father as well as to his brothers, but his father scolded him. “What kind of dream is that?” he asked. “Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow to the ground before you?” 11 But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph, his father wondered what the dreams meant.

Opening QUESTION

Have you ever felt like God put a dream, desire, or calling in your heart—but it didn’t make sense to others?

TRUTH #1

GOD OFTEN PLANTS DREAMS IN US EARLY

Genesis 37:2 (NLT) — ... When Joseph was seventeen years old...

  • Joseph was only seventeen when God began to shape his calling.

  • God often speaks to us before we feel “ready.”

  • A God-given dream often requires growing beyond our current capacity.

  • At this time, Joseph was far too young to fulfill the dream God had given him, but God ultimately matured and positioned Joseph perfectly to succeed.

  • God sees potential long before others do (or long before we do!).

Philippians 1:6 (NLT) — God began the good work within you... and will continue His work.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

Is there a God-given dream you’ve had in your heart for a
long time? Please share it.

TRUTH #2

WHO GOD WANTS US TO BE CAN CREATE TENSION WITH THE PEOPLE CLOSE TO US

Genesis 37:8 (NLT) — His brothers responded, “So you think you will be our king, do you? Do you actually think you will reign over us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them.”

  • Joseph’s dream created jealousy and misunderstanding among his brothers.

  • Not everyone will celebrate the calling God places on your life.

  • Some will misunderstand or oppose what God is doing in you.

Romans 8:28 (NLT) - And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.

  • God can use family tensions, difficulties at home, and all kinds of other difficult situations in our life to refine our character and prepare us for our calling.

  • Joseph’s life was about to be turned upside down, but God never left Him and led Him through it all to his destiny.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

Have you ever faced resistance or misunderstanding when you stepped into something God asked you to do?

TRUTH #3

GOD REVEALS DREAMS TO PREPARE US

Genesis 37:9 (NLT) — Soon Joseph had another dream, and again he told his brothers about it....

  • The fulfillment of both of Joseph’s dreams would ultimately require a great amount of humility and patience – something he seemed to be lacking in at this time.

  • God gives us vision so we can prepare, not so we can boast.

1 Peter 5:6 (NLT) – Humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time He will lift you up.

  • Every calling from God requires waiting, testing, and maturity.

  • God revealed the end before the beginning to strengthen Joseph for the long journey ahead.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

What part of your life right now feels like “preparation time,” and how do you see God using it to shape your character for the future?

CLOSING QUESTION

What is one way you can respond—this week—to a dream or calling God has placed in your heart?

GIVING

Giving is a primary way that we can experience true heart change.

Luke 11:41 (NLT)
So clean the inside by giving gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all over.

Encourage everyone to give their tithes and offerings.
