TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Luke 9:37-43 (NLT) - 37 The next day, after they had come down the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus. 38 A man in the crowd called out to him, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, my only child. 39 An evil spirit keeps seizing him, making him scream. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It batters him and hardly ever leaves him alone. 40 I begged your disciples to cast out the spirit, but they couldn’t do it.” 41 Jesus said, “You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you and put up with you?” Then he said to the man, “Bring your son here.” 42 As the boy came forward, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into a violent convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit and healed the boy. Then he gave him back to his father. 43 Awe gripped the people as they saw this majestic display of God’s power.

Opening question

What stands out to you in this story?

INTRODUCTION

  • This passage takes place immediately after the Mount of Transfiguration. Jesus comes down from a powerful spiritual moment and walks directly into pain, chaos, unbelief, and demonic oppression.

  • This story reminds us that no matter how intense the battle, Jesus is greater.

  • Tonight’s focus is simple but powerful — Jesus is our Deliverer.

  • Jesus delivers us from spiritual bondage, unbelief, and every overwhelming situation, even the ones that feel impossible.

Truth #1

JESUS RESPONDS TO DESPERATE FAITH

Luke 9:38 (NLT) – A man in the crowd called out to him, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, my only child.

  • The father interrupts the crowd and cries out publicly. His desperation overrides any pride.
  • He acknowledges Jesus directly — he brings his need to the only One who can solve it.
  • Jesus does not ignore desperate faith; He moves toward it.
  • Faith does not have to be polished or perfect — it just has to reach for Jesus.
  • Sometimes our breakthrough begins the moment we stop pretending and start pleading.

Hebrews 11:6 (NLT) – ...Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.

  • God responds to wholehearted pursuit.
Jeremiah 29:13 (NLT) - If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What is something in your life right now that requires you to cry out to Jesus instead of trying to manage it yourself?

Truth #2

WHEN IT LOOKS HOPELESS, BREAKTHROUGH MAY BE CLOSEST

Luke 9:42 (NLT) – As the boy came forward, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into a violent convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit and healed the boy.
    • Notice the timing: deliverance was coming - and the demon intensified its attack.
    • The enemy often resists hardest right before losing ground.
    • To the crowd, it likely looked worse before it got better.
    • Hopelessness is often a deception meant to stop us from trusting.
    • The devil tried one last display of control. The chaos was loud - but Jesus had the final word.

John 1:5 (NLT) - The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

    • Darkness may flare, but it cannot overcome the Light. It will ultimately be extinguished.
    • When it seems like all hope is lost, don’t give up — get ready.

    INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What helps you remember that Jesus is still working, even when you don’t see immediate change?

    Truth #3

GOD’S POWER IS FOR A PURPOSE GREATER THAN US

Luke 9:43 (NLT) – Awe gripped the people as they saw this majestic display of God’s power.

    • The miracle did not just impact the boy — it impacted the crowd.
    • The people saw God’s majesty in this deliverance.
    • Jesus’ miracles were never random — they reveal who He is.

John 9:3 (CEB) - …This happened so that God’s mighty works might be displayed in him.

    • When God moves in your life, it becomes a testimony for someone else.
    • Your breakthrough may be the evidence someone else needs to believe.
    • The power is personal — but the purpose is public.
    • Every miracle we see and experience is not just for us — it’s to help others come to know Jesus.

John 20:30-31 (NLT) - The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs… But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.

    INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

If God answered your biggest prayer right now, who would it impact besides you?

    CONCLUSION

    Luke 9:37–43 teaches us:

    • Jesus responds to desperate faith.

    • The darkest moment is not the final moment.

    • His power is always working toward a greater purpose.

The enemy may try to make it look final.
He may try to make it look worse.
He may try to convince you nothing will ever change.

But Jesus steps into chaos and declares deliverance.

    Jesus is our Deliverer.

What’s one thing you learned today that you can apply to your life this week?

9 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. 10 Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.

Encourage everyone to give their tithes and offerings.
