TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Luke 19:1-10 (NLT)

1 Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. 2 There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. 3 He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. 5 When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” 6 Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. 7 But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled. 8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”

opening question

Have you ever gone out of your way to see something or someone you didn’t want to miss? What made it worth it?

truth #1

JESUS CALLS YOU BY NAME.

Luke 19:3-5 (NLT) - He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”
  • Zacchaeus was known as a sinner, a traitor, and a thief—but Jesus didn’t call him by any of those things.
  • Jesus called him by his name.
  • In a crowd full of people, Jesus stopped for the one person no one expected Him to choose.
  • This shows us that Jesus’ call is personal.
  • He sees you, He knows you, and He calls you beyond your past, your mistakes, and the labels others have placed on you.
  • His voice defines you more than anything else ever could.

Isaiah 43:1 (NLT) – Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

What labels (past mistakes, roles, expectations) do people tend to put on you? How does it feel to know that Jesus’ call is more powerful than them all?

truth #2

YOUR RESPONSE REVEALS YOUR HEART.

Luke 19:6-7 (NLT) - Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.
  • There are two responses in this moment.
  • Zacchaeus responds with urgency, humility, and joy.
  • The crowd responds with criticism and resistance.
  • Zacchaeus was willing to run, climb, and ignore what people thought just to be near Jesus.
  • The crowd stood back and judged.
  • When Jesus calls, our response reveals what matters most to us.
  • Hunger moves toward Him, even when it’s uncomfortable or costly.
  • Pride holds back and critiques from a distance.

James 4:6 (NLT) – God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

Do you see more of Zacchaeus or the crowd in your own response to Jesus right now? Why?

truth #3

A REAL ENCOUNTER WITH JESUS WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Luke 19:8-10 (NLT) - Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!” Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”

  • Zacchaeus didn’t need to be told what to do—he knew.
  • His encounter with Jesus immediately changed what he valued most.
  • He let go of the very thing that once defined him.
  • Real repentance is not just feeling bad—it’s choosing a new direction.
  • When Jesus truly enters your life, something shifts, and that shift becomes visible.
  • What you once held onto tightly, you begin to release. What once ruled you no longer has control.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT) – Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

interactive QUESTION

What is one area of your life where you feel God calling you to real change or surrender?

closing QUESTION

If Jesus said to you today, “I’m coming to your house,” what would you need to let go of or change to fully welcome Him?

GIVING

Giving in proportion to what we've received acknowledges God's
abundant provision in our lives and shows our trust in Him as the
source of all our blessings.

Deuteronomy 16:17 (NLT)
All must give as they are able, according to the blessings given to them by the Lord your God.
