TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Luke 20:9–19 (NLT)

9 Now Jesus turned to the people again and told them this story: “A man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and moved to another country to live for several years. 10 At the time of the grape harvest, he sent one of his servants to collect his share of the crop. But the farmers attacked the servant, beat him up, and sent him back empty-handed. 11 So the owner sent another servant, but they also insulted him, beat him up, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 A third man was sent, and they wounded him and chased him away. 13 “‘What will I do?’ the owner asked himself. ‘I know! I’ll send my cherished son. Surely they will respect him.’ 14 “But when the tenant farmers saw his son, they said to each other, ‘Here comes the heir to this estate. Let’s kill him and get the estate for ourselves!’ 15 So they dragged him out of the vineyard and murdered him.“What do you suppose the owner of the vineyard will do to them?” Jesus asked. 16 “I’ll tell you—he will come and kill those farmers and lease the vineyard to others.”

“How terrible that such a thing should ever happen,” his listeners protested.

17 Jesus looked at them and said, “Then what does this Scripture mean?

‘The stone that the builders rejected

has now become the cornerstone.’

18 Everyone who stumbles over that stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone it falls on.”

19 The teachers of religious law and the leading priests wanted to arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers. But they were afraid of the people’s reaction.

INTRODUCTION

Jesus tells this parable to the religious leaders. The vineyard represents God’s Kingdom. The tenants represent the leaders of Israel. The servants represent the prophets. And the son represents Jesus Himself.

Jesus is using this story to give a clear warning. God had been patient for generations, sending messenger after messenger. But instead of receiving them, the people rejected them. Now they are about to reject the Son.

INTERACTIVE question

Why do you think people sometimes reject truth even when it’s clearly from God?

truth #1

GOD'S PATIENCE DOES NOT MEAN PERMISSION (v. 9–13)

  • The owner sends servant after servant to the tenant farmers.
  • Each time they show up, they are beaten, insulted, and sent away. Yet the owner keeps sending more.
  • This reveals something powerful about God: He is incredibly patient.
  • He gives several opportunities to repent.
  • But His patience is not approval of sin.
  • Eventually, the owner says: “I will send my son.”
  • This shows both God’s love and the seriousness of the moment.
2 Peter 3:9 (NLT) – The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise… He is being patient for your sake
  • God’s patience is meant to lead us to repentance, not to justify delay.
  • Don’t confuse God’s mercy with permission to continue in disobedience.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

Why do you think people sometimes take God’s patience for granted?

truth #2

REJECTING JESUS IS REJECTING GOD (v. 14–15)

  • The tenants recognize the son and know exactly who he is, yet they still choose to reject and kill him.
  • Their reasoning: “If we remove him, we can take control.”
  • This is the exact heart of sin: Wanting control instead of surrender.
  • People still reject Jesus today for the same reason:
    • They want control of their lives
    • They resist authority
    • They don’t want to submit
  • But rejecting Jesus does not remove His authority, it only removes our covering.

John 1:11 (NLT) – He came to his own people, and even they rejected him.

  • You don’t accidentally reject Jesus. it’s a choice of the heart.
  • Every day, we either submit to Jesus as Lord or try to take control ourselves.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

What are some ways people today try to “stay in control” instead of surrendering to God?

truth #3

JESUS IS THE CORNERSTONE: WE EITHER BUILD ON HIM OR STUMBLE OVER HIM (v. 16–19)

  • Jesus quotes Scripture: "The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.”
  • The cornerstone is the foundation of the entire building. Everything is aligned around it.
  • Jesus is saying: Even though you reject Me, I am still the foundation of everything God is building.
  • There are only two responses to Jesus:
  • Build your life on Him = stability
  • Reject Him = stumbling
  • Jesus goes on to show that those who oppose Him will ultimately be broken.
  • This is not just a warning, it’s the truth.

1 Peter 2:7–8 (NLT) – He is the stone that makes people stumble… They stumble because they do not obey God’s word.

  • Jesus is not optional. He is the only foundation we can build upon. Without him, our lives are headed for destruction.
  • Your life is being built on something. Make sure it’s built on Christ.

interactive QUESTION

What does it practically look like to build your life on Jesus as the cornerstone?

closing QUESTION

What is one thing you learned from today’s lesson that you will apply this week?

GIVING

True giving is measured by the sacrificial love behind the gift rather than its monetary value.

Mark 12:42-44 (NLT)

42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. 43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”
