29 Then he gave them this illustration: “Notice the fig tree, or any other tree. 30 When the leaves come out, you know without being told that summer is near. 31 In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that the Kingdom of God is near. 32 I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things have taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.34 “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware, 35 like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. 36 Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”

opening question

If you knew Jesus was coming back this week, what would you change?

truth #1

JESUS IS COMING BACK!

Luke 21:27-28 (NLT) - 27 Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory. 28 So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!”
  • Jesus is not staying gone. He is coming back!
  • His return will be public, powerful, and undeniable.
  • For believers, this is not bad news, it’s our hope.
  • Jesus came humbly the first time, but He’s coming back in power.

Revelation 1:7 (NLT) – Look, he is coming with the clouds and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him…

  • No one will miss it. This won’t be hidden. Everyone will see Him.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

Do you think about Jesus’ return as something to fear or something to look forward to? Why?

truth #2

JESUS’ WORDS DON’T FAIL!

Luke 21:32-33 (NLT) - 32 I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things have taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.
  • Everything around us is temporary. All of it can change, but God’s Word never changes.
  • Jesus’ words are not opinions. They are guarantees.
  • If He said it, it will happen.
  • You can build your life on what Jesus says, it won’t collapse.

Matthew 7:24 (NIV) – Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

What are you putting trust in most right now—Jesus’ words or everything else around you?

YOUR HEART CAN DRIFT!

Luke 21:34-35 (NLT) - 34 “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware, 35 like a trap…

  • Distraction and compromise are just as deadly as outright sin.
  • The devil loves to use worldly pleasures, worry, and distraction to slowly pull your heart away from God.
  • If you’re not paying attention, your heart can drift.
  • Staying ready takes intention. You don’t stay ready by accident.

1 Thessalonians 5:6 (NLT) – So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.
