TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Hebrews 2:14- 18(NLT)

14 Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. 15 Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. 16 We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham. 17 Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. 18 Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.

truth #1

JESUS DESTROYED THE POWER OF DEATH

14 Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. 15 Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.

  • The Bible says that Jesus became flesh and blood so that He could die for us.

  • Jesus did not come merely to teach good morals or set an example. He came to defeat sin, Satan, and death through His sacrifice on the cross.
1 Corinthians 15:54-57 (NLT) - “Death is swallowed up in victory… Thanks be to God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

  • Before Christ, humanity lived under the fear and power of death because of sin.

  • Sin separated mankind from God and brought spiritual death into the world.

  • But through His death and resurrection, Jesus broke the power of the devil and made a way for us to have eternal life!

    INTERACTIVE QUESTION

How does knowing that Jesus defeated death change the way we live our lives today?

    truth #2

    JESUS FULLY UNDERSTANDS OUR STRUGGLES

18 Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.

    • Jesus became “like us in every respect.” This means He experienced human weakness, suffering, temptation, rejection, pain, and grief.

    • Jesus understands:
    • what it feels like to be tired
    • what it feels like to be rejected
    • what it feels like to suffer
    • what it feels like to be tempted

    • Yet even though Jesus was tempted, He never sinned.

    • Because Jesus walked through suffering Himself, He is able to help us when we are struggling.
Hebrews 4:15 (NLT) - “This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.”

    • Sometimes people feel alone in their struggles, but Jesus completely understands what we are going through.

    • We never suffer alone because Jesus is with us in every trial.

    INTERACTIVE QUESTION

Why is it encouraging to know that Jesus personally understands our pain and struggles?

    truth #3

JESUS IS OUR MERCIFUL AND FAITHFUL HIGH PRIEST

17 Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people.

    • In the Old Testament, the high priest represented the people before God and offered sacrifices for sin.

    • But those sacrifices had to be repeated over and over again because they could never fully remove sin.

    • Jesus became the perfect High Priest and offered Himself as the final sacrifice once and for all.

Romans 8:34 (NLT) - “Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.”

    • Because of Jesus:
    • our sins can be forgiven
    • we can approach God freely
    • we can receive mercy and grace
    • we can have a restored relationship with the Father

    • Jesus is not a harsh or distant Savior. The Bible calls Him “merciful and faithful.”

    • He is compassionate toward us even in our weakness.

    • Jesus is still interceding for His people today.

    interactive QUESTION

    closing QUESTION

What is one thing you learned from today’s lesson that you will apply this week?

    GIVING

Giving in proportion to what we've received acknowledges God's abundant provision in our lives and shows our trust in Him as the source of all our blessings.

    Deuteronomy 16:17 (NLT)

All must give as they are able, according to the blessings given to them by the Lord your God.

Encourage everyone to give their tithes and offerings.
