GROWTH QUESTION #3

What was your most important accomplishment this week?

TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Hebrews 3:12-15 (NLT) -

12 Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. 13 You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. 14 For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. 15 Remember what it says:

“Today when you hear his voice,

don’t harden your hearts

as Israel did when they rebelled.”

opening question

Have you ever ignored a warning sign and later realized you should have taken it seriously?

truth #1

SIN WILL HARDEN YOUR HEART

Hebrews 3:12-13 (NLT) - 12 Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. 13 You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.

  • This passage gives us a serious warning… Watch your heart!
  • A heart can drift from God before a person even realizes it.
  • The safest response to conviction is immediate repentance.
  • If you choose to repeatedly ignore God’s voice, the result will be a hardened heart.
  • God warns us to check our hearts because He loves us and wants to keep us close to Him.

Psalm 139:23-24 (NLT) - Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

What are some warning signs that your heart may be becoming less sensitive to God?

truth #2

YOU NEED OTHER PEOPLE TO AVOID DECEPTION

Hebrews 3:13 (NLT) - You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.

  • God never designed believers to follow Him alone.
  • Every believer needs people who will help them stay close to God.
  • We need spiritual leaders and friends to help us recognize danger before sin gains control.
  • Warning each other is an act of love, not judgment.
  • Gentle and humble correction is something we are commanded to offer each other.

Galatians 6:1 (NLT) - Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself.

  • A discipleship group should be a place where people are loved and strengthened, but also a place where we are challenged and corrected.
  • Having fellow believers around us who are willing to warn and correct us is important for keeping our hearts soft toward God.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

Why do you think the Bible emphasizes the importance of having other believers around to help us identify danger in our lives?

truth #3

THE FAITHFUL WILL SHARE IN ALL THAT BELONGS TO JESUS

Hebrews 3:14 (NLT) - For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.
  • God wants us to trust Him just as firmly now as when we first believed.
  • Staying faithful to Christ leads to sharing in all that belongs to Christ - including eternal life!

1 Peter 1:4 (TLB) - And God has reserved for his children the priceless gift of eternal life; it is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.

  • Nothing this world offers can compare to the inheritance that Jesus shares with us, but we must remain faithful if we are to lay hold of it!
  • Don’t allow the temptations and struggles of this life to get your eyes off of the prize - eternity spent with Jesus!
