TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Luke 2:25-32 (NLT) - 25 At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him 26 and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 That day the Spirit led him to the Temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, 28 Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying, 29 “Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised. 30 I have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared for all people. 32 He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!”

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

When you think about death or eternity, what emotions tend to surface first—peace, fear, uncertainty, or something else? Why do you think that is?

Step #1

HAVE AN AWARENESS AND EXPECTATION THAT JESUS IS COMING BACK!

Luke 2:25 (NLT) – At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel…

  • Simeon lived his life expecting God to keep His promise. He wasn’t guessing—he was watching.

Titus 2:13 (AMP) - Awaiting and confidently expecting the [fulfillment of our] blessed hope and the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,

  • Being prepared for eternity starts with believing that this life is not all there is.
  • When we know Jesus is coming back, we live differently—we take our faith seriously.

Matthew 24:44 (NLT) - You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.

  • Expectation keeps us spiritually alert instead of distracted or careless.
  • People who are ready for eternity don’t panic about death—they trust God with the future.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

Do you think most people live like this life is all there is? Why or why not?

Step #2

MAKE SURE THAT YOU DON’T DIE UNTIL YOU HAVE RECEIVED JESUS AS YOUR PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOR!

Luke 2:25 (NLT) – … The Holy Spirit was upon him 26 and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.

  • It is God’s will that none of us die without knowing, believing, and accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior.

2 Peter 3:9 (NLT) – The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.

  • The Holy Spirit always points people toward Jesus—just as He led Simeon directly to Christ.

John 15:16 (NLT) – But I will send you the Advocate—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me.

  • Resisting the Holy Spirit delays salvation and robs us of peace.
  • Simeon could say, “Now let your servant die in peace,” because he had encountered Jesus.
  • Without salvation, death brings fear and uncertainty; with salvation, death brings peace and assurance.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

Why do you think people sometimes put off spiritual decisions even when they feel they should respond?

Step #3

CONFESS JESUS AS YOUR PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOR!

Luke 2:30-31 (NLT) – 30 I have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared for all people.

  • Simeon didn’t just talk about salvation, he saw it and experienced it for himself in Jesus Christ.

Acts 4:12 (NLT) - “There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”

  • There is no backup plan and no other name by which we can be saved — Jesus alone saves!
  • Knowing who Jesus is is not the same as receiving Him.
  • We must confess our faith in Jesus Christ out loud.

Romans 10:9-10 (NLT) - 9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

  • Salvation happens when we personally choose to trust in Jesus and declare our faith in Him.

  • All who place their faith in Christ will never be disappointed.

Romans 10:11 (ERV) - Yes, the Scriptures say, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disappointed.”

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What do you think it means to truly trust Jesus?

CLOSING QUESTION

What’s one thing you learned from today’s lesson?

GIVING

The joyous, intentional generosity that springs from a grateful heart reflects the essence of God's love and blesses both the giver and the recipient.

2 Corinthians 9:7 (NLT)

You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

Encourage everyone to give their tithes and offerings.
