TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Matthew 13:53-58 NLT 53 When Jesus had finished telling these stories and illustrations, he left that part of the country. He returned to Nazareth, his hometown. 54 When he taught there in the synagogue, everyone was amazed and said, “Where does he get this wisdom and the power to do miracles?” 55 Then they scoffed, “He’s just the carpenter’s son, and we know Mary, his mother, and his brothers—James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas. 56 All his sisters live right here among us. Where did he learn all these things?” 57 And they were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family.” 58 And so he did only a few miracles there because of their unbelief.”

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What did you learn from what we just read?

TRUTH #1

Jesus used stories and illustrations to share His message. (v. 53a)

  • DEFINITION - Illustration: a picture or diagram that helps make something clear or attractive
  • When sharing about Jesus with someone or leading someone to Christ, it’s always good to share your story, give a picture or diagram that will help them to understand your message.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

If you were to tell your story or give a picture of your life to help someone understand the message of Christ, what would it be?

TRUTH #2

Jesus calls us to share the Gospel with our family and friends at home. (v. 53b)

  • After performing many miracles, Jesus returned to His own hometown to continue His ministry and teach there.
  • Though He likely anticipated the reception that He would receive there, Jesus took responsibility to preach to His hometown and showed us an example we should follow.
  • We may find it easier to share what Jesus has done for with people we don’t know well, but God has given us the responsibility to share the Gospel with our loved ones.
  • In Acts 1:8, Jesus again makes it clear that our friends and family at home should be a priority for us.

Acts 1:8 NLT But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

  • Jerusalem represents your home; Judea represents your neighbors; Samaria represents your city.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

Who is someone in your home, neighborhood or city that you can share the gospel with?

TRUTH #3

They scoffed at Jesus and were deeply offended by Him

  • Jesus was not accepted in His own home, His own town or His own city.

  • Scoffed: speak to someone or about something in a scornfully derisive or mocking way.
  • Although they were impressed with Jesus, they couldn’t get over the fact that they grew up with him. (They saw him only as one of them.)
  • Their lack of belief in Jesus led to Him only doing a few miracles in their town.

Matthew 10:14 NLT If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

Have you ever been mocked or ridiculed for sharing your faith with family? What was your response and how did you handle it?

CLOSING QUESTION

What is one thing you have learned from today’s lesson?

GIVING

Giving God our best unleashes His abundant provision, filling our lives with blessings that overflow and reflect His generosity.

Proverbs 3:9-10 (NLT)
9 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. 10 Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.

Encourage everyone to give their tithes and offerings.
