TODAY’S PASSAGE:

2 Peter 1:3-7 (NLT) - 3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 4 And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. 5 In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.

TRUTH #1

GOD HAS GIVEN US EVERYTHING WE NEED TO LIVE A GODLY LIFE! (V. 3)

  • Christians are called to live a godly life, a life committed to honoring God in all that we do and obeying His commands at all times.
  • The good news is that God will never call us to do something that He will not empower us to do! He has already given us everything we need to live a godly life!
  • The salvation of our souls for eternity comes through knowing Jesus.

John 17:3 (NLT) - And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.

  • Just like the salvation of our souls comes through knowing Jesus, the power to live godly lives also comes through knowing Jesus too!

 If we have been given all the power we need to live godly lives, why do so many Christians still struggle with sin?

TRUTH #2

 THERE’S POWER IN HIS PROMISES! (V. 4)

  • Peter describes the promises we have in Jesus as great and precious. The promises we have in Him are incredibly valuable.
  • When a person makes you a promise, that promise’s worth is determined by how well you can trust the person. Since God never lies and always keeps his promises, his promises are worth infinitely more than anyone else’s.

Numbers 23:19 (CEV) - God is no mere human! He doesn't tell lies or change his mind. God always keeps his promises.

  • A promise from God is a declaration of certainty. If God says it, you can trust that it’s going to happen.
  • He has promised us eternal life and made us into new creations.  
  • Knowing God’s promises are true empowers us to live a life that we could not live without Him.

WE MUST USE WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN US! (V. 5)

  • God has given us all we need to live like Jesus, but we must actually use those gifts.
  • After receiving all of God’s promises and the power that comes from them, we have to make a choice to use that power! 
  • We have been set free from the power of sin, now we should live like it!

Romans 6:6, 12 (NLT) - 6 We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. 12 Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires.

  • God has given us the power to live godly lives, to take the control of our lives back from sin, but we must choose to walk in it!

GIVING

There are no real “get-rich-quick” schemes, so don’t try to hoard all you get. Generosity will lead to satisfaction and fulfillment in this life.

Greedy people try to get rich quick but don’t realize they’re headed for poverty.
