TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Genesis 17:1–8 (NLT) - 1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. 2 I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.” 3 At this, Abram fell face down on the ground. Then God said to him, 4 “This is my covenant with you: I will make you the father of a multitude of nations! 5 What’s more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham, for you will be the father of many nations. 6 I will make you extremely fruitful. Your descendants will become many nations, and kings will be among them!7 “I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendants after you, from generation to generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8 And I will give the entire land of Canaan, where you now live as a foreigner, to you and your descendants. It will be their possession forever, and I will be their God.”

Opening QUESTION

What would it look like for you to “serve God faithfully and live a blameless life” in your everyday life?

TRUTH #1

GOD CALLS US TO WALK FAITHFULLY WITH HIM

  • God reveals Himself in this passage for the first time as El-Shaddai — the Almighty, All-Sufficient God.
  • God called Abraham to walk faithfully and blamelessly, meaning to live with integrity and wholehearted devotion.
  • God doesn’t call us to perfection, but to sincere commitment and trust.

Micah 6:8 (NLT) – The Lord has told you what is good... to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

  • Walking faithfully means daily obedience, even when the promises seem delayed.
  • Our relationship with God grows stronger when we trust in His power instead of our own strength.

1 Thessalonians 5:24 (NLT) – God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

What is one area of your life right now where God might be calling you to walk more faithfully with Him?

TRUTH #2

GOD GIVES US A NEW IDENTITY IN HIS PROMISE

  • Abram’s name was changed to Abraham to match God’s promise – from “Exalted father” to “Father of many nations.”
  • God often redefines us, not by our past or current circumstances, but by His purpose for our future.
  • When God names us, He is declaring who we are in His plan, not just who we are today.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT) – Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

  • Our identity is rooted in God’s covenant love, not in our failures or limitations.
  • Abraham’s new name spoke to where God was taking him and what God wanted to accomplish through him. This is part of God’s plan for all of His children. He has a new name for each of us.

Revelation 2:17 (NIV) – To the one who is victorious... I will give that person a white stone with a new name written on it.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

If God were to “rename” you based on the future He sees for you, what kind of name might He give you?

TRUTH #3

GOD’S COVENANT PROMISES ARE EVERLASTING

  • God promised Abraham not just descendants, but nations and kings.
  • The covenant was “everlasting” — God would be their God forever.
  • This covenant extended beyond Abraham to his descendants, and ultimately to all who belong to Christ.

Galatians 3:29 (NIV) – If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

  • God also promised land to Abraham and his descendants, a tangible inheritance, as a sign of His faithfulness.
  • In Christ, we too share in a tangible inheritance – the Holy Spirit, eternal life, adoption into God’s family, and a future home with Him.

Ephesians 1:13–14 (NLT) – And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit… The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people.

INTERACTIVE QUESTION

Who can share something that they’re facing this week with more peace and confidence knowing God has promised us an everlasting inheritance?

CLOSING QUESTION

Of the three truths we studied, which one speaks most to where you are right now, and how can you apply it this week?

GIVING

Generosity and godliness go hand in hand.

Psalm 37:21 (NLT)
The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are generous givers.

Encourage everyone to give their tithes and offerings.
