TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Romans 5:1-5 NLT 1 Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. 2 Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. 3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

TRUTH #1

We are made right in God’s sight.

Romans 5:1-5 NLT Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.

  • We’ve all sinned, and we all owe a price for our sin. That price can’t be paid by our own good works, because our good works will never be enough.
  • The only hope we have to be made right in God’s sight is if God found a way to pay for it... which HE DID!
  • The reason we can be made right in God’s sight and have peace with God is because of what Jesus Christ has done for us!
  • We’re made right with God as a result of putting our faith in Jesus, not because of anything else we’ve done.
  • Faith: a strong conviction or beleif that Jesus is our savior, through whom we obtain eternal salvation.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

QUESTION: What does it mean to for you to be made right in God’s sight?

TRUTH #2

We are given undeserved privileges because of Christ.

v.2 - Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.

  • The faith that we now have also gives us the underserved privilege of God’s grace.
  • Grace: God's grace is usually defined as undeserved favor.
  • Grace cannot be earned; God freely gives it.

Ephesians 2:8-9 NLT - “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.”

  • We receive God’s favor and blessings becuase of the things He has done, not becuase of the things we have done.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What are some of the underserved privileges that you are thankful for today?

TRUTH #3

We can rejoice when we face trials because they make us stronger!

v.3-4 - 3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

  • One of the privileges we have in Christ is that we can rejoice when we face troubles of any kind, because they help us to grow!
  • Trials produce Endurance - when we face trials, it helps to develop our ability to not give up!
  • Endurance produces strength of Character - when our endurance develops, it strengthens who we are in Christ.
  • Character produces our confident hope - when our character in Christ develops, our hope in Christ is strengthened.
  • This is why we should never be discouraged when we are facing difficult times, because in the end we grow!

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

How does this passage change your perspective about trials that come your way?

CLOSING QUESTION

What is one thing you have learned from today’s lesson?

GIVING

When we give our present resources to those in need, we store up eternal treasures that can never be taken away.

Luke 12:33 (NLT)
Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it.

Encourage everyone to give their tithes and offerings.
