TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Matthew 26:39-46 NLT 39 He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” 40 Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? 41 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!” 42 Then Jesus left them a second time and prayed, “My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open. 44 So he went to pray a third time, saying the same things again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But look—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!”

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What did you learn from what we just read?

TRUTH #1

Gods will, not my will.

  • Even Jesus asked for things to go differently, but he ultimately submitted to God's will.
  • Prayer aligns our heart to His, which then aligns our will to His. Prayer positions us for purpose.
  • Jesus' prayer was in reference to his coming suffering on the cross.
  • When God asks you to do something, there is always a purpose to the suffering.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

When was there a time you submitted to God's will over yours? What was the outcome?

TRUTH #2

Don’t sleep on your assignment.

  • If Peter woke up (both physically and spiritually) and drew close in dependence on God, he might have been kept from denying Jesus at the critical hour.
  • God sometimes speaks to us during the night because that's when he can finally get our attention.
  • Jesus prompted them to pray because he knew of the spiritual battle ahead.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

Let’s evaluate our prayer life. What’s your prayer life on a scale of 1-10. Explain why.

TRUTH #3

Pray without ceasing.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:17 'Never stop praying.

  • This shows us that it is not unspiritual to make the same request to God several times.
  • The spiritual battle was coming whether or not they prayed. But Prayer, prepared Jesus to defeat the battle.

CLOSING QUESTION

What is one thing you have learned from today’s lesson?

GIVING

A desire to share our abundance with others and meet their needs grows from a heart that recognizes the blessings we have received, including eternal life, all come from God.

Luke 3:11 (NLT)
John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”
