TODAY’S PASSAGE:

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NLT 9 Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. 11 Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What did you learn from what we just read?

TRUTH #1

A lifestyle of sin prevents us from the Kingdom of God (v. 9-10)

  • At this time, many people in Corinth were indulging in a lifestyle of sin with no repentence or change, so Paul was writing in a very corrective tone to the church in Corinth.
  • Like the Corinthians, we all have a past stained by the mark of sin.

Romans 3:23 NLT - For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

  • Anyone who continues in a life of sin and does not repent (or turn away from their old lifestyle) will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
  • Thankfully, God has given us the way to be forgiven and set free from sin!

John 8:34-36 NLT 34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. 35 A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

What are some areas you can ideintify that you needed to “turn away from”? How can you support those around you to avoid falling back into that lifestyle?

TRUTH #2

Don’t forget where you came from (v. 11)

1 Corinthians 6:11a - Some of you were once like that.

  •  It’s easy to forget what God deleivered you from.
  • Always remember that we are all in need of a savior. It doesn’t matter how far you’ve grown, you will still always need Jesus!
When we don’t forget where we came from, it helps us lead others to a place of freedom with love and care.

Galatians 6:1 NLT - Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path.

  • Let’s not look down on one another, but instead help each other up when we’ve fallen.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

Why is the wisdom of the world considered "foolishness" in the sight of God? What are some practical examples of worldly wisdom that can lead us away from God's wisdom? Is there an area of your life that you need Godly wisdom in? If so, would you like to share?

TRUTH #3

Stay unified and focused on Christ.

  • God’s ability to transform us is remarkable. He does not merely save us from our past sins, he transforms us into something completely new.

2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT - This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

  • DEFINTION - Cleansed (apolouō): to wash fully, to make thoroughly clean, to get rid of something unpleasant, unwanted or defiling,
  • DEFINITION - “Made holy” (hagiazō): purify, consecrate, sanctify, free from the guilt of sin, purify internally by renewing the soul
  • DEFINITION - “Made right” (dikaioō): show or prove to be right or acceptable, put in right standing with God, to make worthy, declare guiltless
  • God’s redemptive power is so thorough and complete that nothing remains of the old man - no guilt, no shame, no defiling sin can remain.
  • When we call on Jesus, our lives are completely changed. Who we once were is completely destroyed and we are given brand new lives and identities in Him.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS

In the context of the Church, what does it mean to "boast in men"? How can we avoid this and instead give glory to God for all things? How does the idea that "you are Christ's, and Christ is God's" (1 Corinthians 3:23) influence our understanding of our identity as believers and our purpose within the Church?

CLOSING QUESTION

What is one thing you have learned from today’s lesson?

GIVING

When believers give to support the work of the Gospel, it has eternal value and comes with an eternal reward.

Philippians 4:15-17 (NLT)
15 As you know, you Philippians were the only ones who gave me financial help when I first brought you the Good News and then traveled on from Macedonia. No other church did this. 16 Even when I was in Thessalonica you sent help more than once. 17 I don’t say this because I want a gift from you. Rather, I want you to receive a reward for your kindness.

Encourage everyone to give their tithes and offerings.
